The University of Southern California (USC)
In the 1870s, Los Angeles was a rough and disorderly frontier town until a group of concerned citizens led by Judge Robert Maclay thought of establishing a university in the region. Despite their efforts, it took almost a decade to make this fantasy a reality. However, in 1879, Judge Robert Maclay gathered a group of trustees and formed a board.
He garnered a total of 308 lots of land as donations from prominent members of the society. These donations provided land for a campus, as well as a source of income for the university.
Despite opening its doors for the first 53 students and 10 tutors in 1880, Los Angeles still lacked basic commodities like electric lights, effective fire alarm systems, telephones, and paved streets.
At the moment, USC hosts over 48,000 students and full-time 4,400 faculty. Its also located in the heart of one of the most known cities in the world.
