California State University, Long Beach
California State University (CSULB) was established by Governor Warren Earl in 1949. The main aim of the university was to serve the population of Southern Los Angeles and Orange Counties that were swelling after the Second World War. Since then, the university has expanded to become one of the top universities in the state.
The first president of CSULB was Peter Victor Peterson. By then, the university was called Los Angeles-Orange County State College. It had 13 faculty members who taught 25 courses in apartment buildings in Long Beach.
In 1950, a 322-acre piece of land was bought and a permanent structure for CSULB was built. Since then, the students' population has been growing every year.

CSULB is also known to produce the largest number of graduates in MSc. in Nursing in its 23-campus system. The university also offers undergraduate engineering courses and it has been ranked among the top 50 best engineering colleges in the state.
The National Science Foundation ranked CSULB as the nation’s top university in producing students who end up earning doctoral degrees in science-related subjects.
In 2011, the university built a Hall of Science at a cost of $105. The structure has labs and offices for members of the departments of science education, physics, geology, chemistry, biochemistry, and biology.
CSULB is also home to an observatory, a greenhouse facility, a marine biology lab, and a hands-on children’s museum.
CSULB has three Liberal Arts colleges: College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, and the College of the Arts. It also has five vocational colleges including College of Continuing & Professional Education, College of Health & Human Services, College of Engineering, College of Education, and the College of Business. In total, the university offers three doctoral degrees (one independent and two joint), sixteen credential programs related to education, 67 master’s degrees, and over 80 baccalaureate degrees.
Notable CSULB Alumni
As of 2018, the CSULB had over 320,000 alumni. The alumni have directed, acted, and even written screenplays attracting Oscar-level talents. For example, David Twohy co-wrote The Fugitive, a film that received the Academy Award. Linda Woolverton wrote the script for Beauty and the Beast by Disney, she also wrote the script for The Lion King and Alice in Wonderland. All these are award-winning animated films.
J. F. Lawton is the writer of the film Pretty Woman. The film stars Julia Roberts, an award-winning actress. Another notable CSULB alumnus is Misty May-Treanor, a volleyball player that has won many gold medals.
Former CSULB students have won more than five Academy Awards. Some of those who have won the awards include Steven Spielberg, John Dystra, and Deborah L. Scott who won an Oscar for designing the costumes used in the Titanic film.
Former students and alumni of CSULB have also taken part in sports. Jason Vargas, Steve Trachsel, Jered Weaver, Harold Reynolds, Troy Tulowitzki, Evan Longoria, and Jason Giambi, have taken part in the All-Stars Major League Baseball tournaments.
